"Sealer" is a category, not a product. There are five common types, each designed for a different problem. Putting the wrong one on the right stone produces a worse result than putting no sealer at all.
1. Penetrating (impregnating) sealer
The most common choice for natural stone. It soaks into the pores and creates a molecular barrier against water and oil without changing how the stone looks. Best for marble, granite, limestone, travertine, and most countertops and floors. Lasts 1–3 years depending on porosity and traffic.
2. Enhancing sealer
A penetrating sealer that also deepens color — pulling out the depth in travertine, slate, and tumbled stone. Great where you want the "wet look" without an actual coating. Choose carefully; the color shift is permanent for the life of the sealer.
3. Topical sealer (coating)
Sits on top of the stone like a clear coat. Mostly used on quarry tile and some terrazzo. Visible if installed wrong. Not recommended for marble or other premium stone — it changes the look and wears unevenly.
4. Anti-etch sealer
A newer category of topical or hybrid coating designed specifically to resist the acid reaction that causes etching. Useful on heavily used marble counters where citrus and wine are everyday risks. Sacrificial — needs reapplication.
5. Color sealer (for grout)
Not for stone itself. For grout joints. Locks in color, resists staining, lasts 10–15 years. Transformative on showers and floors with discolored grout.
Quick picker
- Marble kitchen counter → penetrating, plus optional anti-etch
- Travertine pool deck → Florida-grade penetrating with UV stabilizers
- Limestone shower → penetrating, low-residue formulation
- Quarry tile floor → topical (only if the original install was topical)
- Outdoor pavers → enhancing penetrating sealer
The right sealer applied poorly is worse than no sealer at all. Application — including dwell time and removal of excess — matters as much as the product.
